Fraunhofer Brings Cutting Edge Technology To Mobile Phones

Fraunhofer Institute for Open Communication Systems (Fraunhofer FOKUS) has introduced a mobile multimedia service which will make sure football fans do not miss any action of matches even when they are on the move.

The service abbreviated as FUSECO Playground would be highly beneficial for developers in researching and testing prototypes for next generation mobile broadband applications. Even the components and protocols could be developed and practically field-tested.

The makers are planning its launch on May 17, 2010 at the 6th International Testbed Conference “TridentCom2010" in Berlin. Fraunhofer FOKUS has joined hands with Technische Universität Berlin, the Fraunhofer Heinrich-Hertz Institute and Deutsche Telekom Laboratories to make this project a reality.

The company feels that such innovations in mobile technologies are independent and do not depend on the network provider or the mobile manufacturer. Smartphones and tablet PCs continuously need such inventions in order to continuously give a different and exciting experience to their users.

With the help of this new multimedia service OpenEPC can link the whole range of IP platforms effortlessly according to the latest standards from IPTV and cloud platforms over IP multimedia sub system (IMS) based service platforms to proprietary company platforms. For instance if a service is developed to watch live sports on smartphones the OpenEPC will link the IP-based streaming platform of a broadcasting company to various mobile networks. FUSECO Playground will test different platforms and will give the best suited one.

A lot of emphasis is given to the user’s IP in this service and network providers would be able to categorize their customers IP for either telephone services or premium internet access. But there might be users who make heavy use of both the services from their phones how will their IP be categorized is not clear.

Such innovations by companies like Fraunhofer FOKUS can take mobile phones to an all new level. This will help network providers in classifying their customers better on the basis of their usage of certain services or call usage.

Broadband sees an unprecedented surge in Russia

Broadband internet has come of age and that too in a really big way. After taking the major developed countries by storm, such as United Kingdom, United States of America, France, Germany, Canada, Australia etc , Broadband internet is also strengthening its foothold in Russia. The capital city Moscow and the major financial hub St. Petersburg already had adequate broadband infrastructure but it’s the rising demand and use of high speed broadband in the central areas of Chelyabinsk and Izhevsk that’s creating the real news. Basically the usage of Broadband internet in the region has increased to 62% in both regions. In the year 2008, broadband coverage in Chelyabinsk stood at 45% while it stood at 55% in Izhevsk.
If observed keenly, one will find that the usage rate of broadband internet in Chelyabinsk and Izhevsk is only marginally behind the usage rate of broadband internet in Moscow (71%) and almost equal to the usage rate in St. Petersburg.

Ufa and Penza, situated to the west of the Ural mountains have a usage rate of approximately 55%. The population in both the regions is between five lakh and one million. This means that a substantial number of people are making use of high speed broadband in the region and that is a good sign for future economic development there.

Wide spreading use of broadband in South Africa

World Wide Worx in a common venture with Cisco conducted The Internet Access in South Africa 2010 study and has in its findings that there is an increase of more than 50% in the number of South Africans using broadband internet connection wherein, the number for wireless broadband has arisen almost three times in comparison with the number for fixed broadband lines.
The study attributed the growth of the fixed broadband connections to the up gradation to ADSL of small and medium enterprises (SMEs) making access for new half-a-million small offices workers.
With the deployment of 3G cards, the wireless broadband users have increased by 88%mostly including the corporate users.
The enhanced ability to collaborate and share information is expected to enhance greatly the productivity and profitability across the region.
Talking about the impact of the current cable projects coming into operation, the World Wide Worx revealed that the increase would have been 150 times over 2008 making the capacity 1 690Gbps at the end of 2009, 5 410Gbps at the end of 2010 and 14 770Gbps in 2011.
According to the study, the sparking increase of 18% in service providers and number of internet access has been caused due to the availability of new licenses and fibre access.

Arthur Goldstuck, Managing Director of World Wide Worx said that despite wireless broadband being expensive and of inferior quality when compared to fixed broadband, the sales have gone up tremendously due to convenient and flexible services.
He also added that the mix of new undersea cables and terrestrial fibre-optic networks clearly depicts the transition to next generation connectivity for both fixed and wireless connectivity. The customer access equipment for users and economical availability of access for non-users are now the missing ingredients.

Harper government sucks rural broadband strategy fund for CAP

Liberal MPs said that Tony Clement , the industry minister , while making pay for Community Access Program (CAP) from the Rural Broadband fund must affirm the rural Canadians for their share of fund for the rural broadband internet.
Liberal Industry Critic Marc Garneau said that in the era of digitalization the rural broadband must be considered parallel to CAP as such programs help the rural area Canadians to get online employment, training, education, markets, economic and government services that they aspire to seek.
The industry ministry in rectification of his statement that the funds for CAP are coming to an end on april1 said that CAP sites which had been developed in 1995 by the liberal government to rural and remote schools, library and community centres will remain to get funding from rural broadband strategy fund.
Mr. Garneau said that Mr. Clement has rolled out letters to schools, libraries and community centres stating that they would not get internet funding in an attempt to control political damage but he has still got to give an explanation for the fate of rural broadband strategy if that fund would be used to cover CAP.
The rural broadband strategy fund rolled out in 2009 budget will run out in two years and till date zero funding has been made for the aforesaid purpose and the allocations has been done for the CAP from that very fund.

TeleGeography’s John Dinsdale was of the opinion that this raise in the demand and sales could be because broadband is still a matter of luxury and can be afforded by few users in the developing markets.
